Perched on the hillside in Prazeres, on the southwest coast of Maderia, this modern, three-bedroom villa is a haven of peace and tranquillity. Surrounded by treetops and overlooking the ocean, the location is wonderfully quiet and you’ll soon be feeling suitably relaxed.
The rooms are all located on one level giving the property a sense of fluidity, and inside the décor is simple and fresh with cream and light grey tones throughout. The open-plan living area is adorned with simple understated furnishings, and a log burner in the lounge makes things cosy on chilly nights. The well-equipped kitchen features a dishwasher and washing machine, and overlooks the lounge so you can be part of the conversation while preparing meals. A dining table, seating 10 people, is perfect for creating memorable meals while glass floor-to ceiling windows and doors drench the whole space in uplifting, natural light. Homely touches include soft cushions on the sofa and artwork on the whitewashed walls.
Off from the living area are three well-sized bedrooms, and three bathrooms with showers. Two of the bathrooms are en-suite. The bedrooms all feature glass doors so in the morning you can push them open and breathe in the forest views and listen to the trees rustling in the breeze.
Outside the setting could not be more idyllic. There’s an attractive blue swimming pool, a neat garden and a decked terrace dotted with sun loungers all overlooked by pine trees and acacias. This is a place to do exactly as you please whether it’s splashing in the pool, snoozing on a lounger or whiling away hours gazing at the majestic view.
Although the villa is set in a rural location, it’s only a 5-minute walk to a mini market, traditional restaurant and local café. And for those seeking more activity you can hike through the Prazeres forest (there’s a walking trail on your doorstep) or make a trip to one of the nearby beaches. But come dinnertime, gather the family, put some fresh fish on the barbeque and enjoy dining alfresco at the outdoor table while watching the sun dissolve into the sea.
Casa Cossart is located in the quiet foothills of the Prazeres forest in the rural southwest region of Madeira. Prazeres village, meaning ‘pleasures’ is a 6-minute drive from the villa and is aptly named. Famed for its beauty and tranquillity, this quaint village is dotted with family-run restaurants, cafes and poncho bars.
Children will love the small animal farm with its goats and pigs, and there’s also a cider mill and a tearoom (serving cider) making Prazeres a lovely place to spend an afternoon. There’s a lively market every Sunday, so be sure to come and stock up on colourful fresh fruits and locally grown vegetables.
From Prazeres a steep path, with spectacular views, leads down to the ancient fishing village of Paul do Mar. Once only accessible by boat today this fishing village is famed for its sunny weather and delicious seafood. Relax at one of the many restaurants, soak up the sun and enjoy freshly cooked fish delivered straight from the fishing boats.
Some of the best surf on the island can be found in this area, and experienced surfers can ride the waves here or at the nearby pebbly beach of Praia do Jardim.
The Prazeres region also possesses some excellent hiking trails known as levadas walks. The levadas are narrow channels that carry water long distances to banana groves and vineyards, making them excellent walking routes. One that shouldn’t be missed is the trail that connects Prazeres to Raposeira. An easy 6.7km trail, hikers can enjoy beautiful views, lush mountainous countryside, streams and a lovely waterfall.
For a great family day out be sure to head to Calheta and it’s beautiful sandy beach. It’s a 12-minute drive from the villa and the perfect place to relax. Children can safely swim in the water as sea walls protect the area from waves or build castles on the shore. Grab a bite to eat at one of the cafes or restaurants along the promenade, then stroll to the marina and watch the boats bopping on the water. There are also plenty of water sport activities on offer too. Try your hand at paragliding, scuba diving or windsurfing. Alternatively, book a boat trip and spend the afternoon spotting whales and dolphins.
