This small rocky peninsula on the Normandy coast was originally a tidal island: accessible by land during low tide and surrounded by water when the tide was up. There is now a narrow, raised causeway leading to the island. There are various ways to visit Mont Saint Michel, though the peninsula itself is only accessible to pedestrians. Don't forget to visit the centuries-old monastery on the peninsula as well. The pirate city of Saint Malo (42 km), with its old city walls, beaches and vibrant centre, is also worth a visit, as is la côte d'Emeraude (42 km). This rocky and rugged coastline stretches from Cap Fréhel to Calcale, with its emerald green water. Further offshore from Saint Malo are the Channel Islands: Jersey, Guernsey, Sark, Herm, Alderney and various smaller islands. These islands are British crown dependencies, with a culture formed from a mishmash of French and English traditions. Another option is a daytrip inland to Rennes (80 km), which is the regional capital of Brittany.
