This is picture-perfect Provence with lavender, roses, cypresses and idyllic views of the surrounding Luberon countryside. With charming stone walls and such inviting interiors, Villa La Badelle is near the iconic perched villages of Gordes and Roussillon.
This traditional stone house is immaculate in so many ways. We love the attractive lounge with its Provençal fireplace (perfect for winter stays), comfortable furnishings and French windows opening out to the terraces and garden. The kitchen is perfectly equipped for meals chez vous, best enjoyed al-fresco beneath the pergola on the gorgeous dining terrace overlooking the garden.
The ground floor is home to three pretty double bedrooms, two with doors opening out to the terrace, alongside two bathrooms. At the top of the stairs, a fourth double can be found in the loft beneath the sloping eaves, allowing Villa La Badelle to welcome up to 8 guests.
The garden is simply wonderful – listen to the trickle of the swimming pool as you enjoy your morning coffee beneath the huge tree overlooking the lavender or watch kids splash around from the shade of the pool house lounge. The raised stone terraces add to the Provençal charm and the vistas towards the Luberon countryside are glorious. This really is an enchanting setting at any time of year.
Following the country roads, a little hamlet is around 1.7km away with a well-regarded bistro serving a seasonal menu accompanied by good wine. You are also just over a 5-minute drive from Goult, an old and very charming Luberon village with restaurants, a handful of useful shops (grocery store, pain de depot, cheesemongers) and a lovely market on a Thursday morning. In the other direction is Gordes, 6km by car, officially classified as one of France’s most beautiful villages with its winding lanes, art galleries, excellent restaurants, Tuesday morning market and incredible vistas from its hilltop setting.
Other iconic perched villages of the Luberon include Roussillon, Ménerbes and Bonnieux, all within a 15-minute drive. There are also so many amazing hiking trails and cycling routes nearby passing poppy fields, vineyards, cherry orchards and dense forest – this really is a stunning region of Provence.
Beyond the Luberon, another gem of Provence is L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue with its riverside cafes and antique stores, not far from Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, a paradise for hikers and canoeing enthusiasts. Avignon is another fantastic day out or venture to Les Alpilles for art galleries, olive groves and pretty hilltop villages near Saint-Rémy, Les Baux-de-Provence and Arles.
In the Luberon region, Villa La Badelle is superbly located for exploring this captivating part of Provence. What’s more, it is only 6km from Gordes, one of France’s most beautiful villages.
The nearest three airports are Avignon (30km), Marseille (71km) and Nimes (83km) or arrive by train into Gare d’Avignon TGV (40km) – Paris to Avignon is around 2 hours 40 minutes by train.
The house enjoys a rural setting just off a country road – you can walk (no pavements) to a little hamlet around 2km away with a highly regarded Provençal bistro serving seasonal produce and good wine. The charming old village of Goult is only 4km by car with more lovely restaurants as well as little shops (an épicerie, cheese shop, bakery etc) and a delightful market on a Thursday morning.
Hilltop Gordes (6km) is officially classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ and hosts its wonderful market on a Tuesday morning. Artists have been inspired by Gordes’ surrounding landscapes for years – potter around the village’s art studios and galleries, dine out in one of Gordes’ many restaurants and visit Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque for more photogenic scenery.
Other iconic perched villages of the Luberon are also easily reached including Ménerbes (10km), Bonnieux (12km) and red-hued Roussillon (8km). A little further afield, follow Camus’ footsteps in Lourmarin (25km), buy local cherries in Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt (17km) and experience the huge Saturday morning market in Apt (19km).
Beyond the Luberon, don’t miss the famous Sunday morning brocante in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (18km), canoe or kayak along the Sorgue River near Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (18.5km), admire the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Avignon (40km) and visit the lavender fields of Sault (35km), usually in bloom around late June to early August.
